The Anchor Church caves in Derbyshire have recently made headlines. The caves are built of Keuper sandstone and were always thought to be follies with no purpose. According to new evidence, scientists believe the Anglo-Saxon cave house belonged to a 9th century King of Northumbria named Eardwulf, whoever he was!
We tried to explore the caves last winter, but the path was completely submerged. Too deep for my wellies, but a canoe might have come in in! We decided to try again because the weather has just improved.
We arrived at the once-flooded trail after only a short walk through the field. Thankfully, the ground was bone dry this time. You’d never guess that these amazing caves were only around the corner. They just seemed to be strewn about.
